Steel Needs a Different Plan

Metal building and barn insulation is a big part of the work around San Angelo, where ranch and farm properties often include a steel shop, hay barn or equipment shed, and town lots add detached workshops and garages. Bare metal panels heat fast in the sun and cool fast at night. Warm, moist air touching cold steel condenses and drips onto whatever is stored underneath. Spray foam handles both problems in one application.

Why closed-cell on steel

Closed-cell foam bonds to the metal, fills the ribs and fastener gaps, and at normal thickness slows vapor so moisture cannot reach the cold steel. HomeGuide lists it at R-5 to R-7 per inch, so a couple of inches does meaningful work. It also stiffens the panels slightly and quiets rain and hail noise. Open-cell foam can be used in some metal buildings, but it lets vapor through, so it generally needs a liner or a different moisture plan. For most shops and barns, closed-cell is the default.

Heat in summer, drip in winter

San Angelo's climate data show about 30 days a year at 100F or more, plus roughly 60 nights below freezing. A steel building sees both extremes on its roof. In summer the panels radiate heat down onto people, livestock feed and equipment. On winter mornings, after a cold night, condensation forms on the inside of the panels when the air warms. Foam on the roof and walls takes the edge off the summer heat and stops the winter drip.

What we look at first

Before quoting, we check the building's purpose. A heated and cooled workshop needs a full envelope: roof, walls, doors and the gaps at the base. A hay barn may only need the roof done to stop drip. An equipment shed with open sides may not need foam at all. We also check for existing faced fiberglass that has sagged or been chewed, rust on the panels, and roof leaks at screws that should be fixed before anything is sprayed.

Codes and outbuildings

Whether an outbuilding needs a permit or must meet the energy code depends on how it is used and where it sits. A shop that will be heated and cooled for daily use, or one with living space, is treated differently from a barn. If you are inside San Angelo city limits or another city, check with the building office. In the county, ask about any requirements before converting a barn into living space.

Doors, ends and edges

A foamed roof with open eaves and a gap under the overhead door leaks a lot of air. We seal ridge and eave gaps where needed, foam the end walls, and point out where weatherstrip or a better door seal would help. If the building will hold animals or feed, we talk about where foam needs protecting from chewing and damage.

Metal Building & Barn Insulation Questions

How thick should spray foam be on a metal building?

It depends on use. To stop condensation, a modest layer of closed-cell often does it; a cooled shop usually needs more. The quote lists the planned thickness.

Can you spray foam over old fiberglass in a metal building?

Usually the old faced fiberglass has to come down first so the foam can bond to the steel. We check its condition during the visit.

Does spray foam help with hail noise?

Closed-cell foam on the panels dampens rain and hail noise noticeably, though it will not silence a hailstorm.

Do I need a permit to insulate my barn?

Usually insulating alone is simple, but converting a barn to a heated shop or living space can bring permit and code requirements. Check with the city or county building office first.
